Disturbed + Shinedown @ Carling Academy Glasgow 7/10/08
By Emma Jackson

Disturbed have been around since 1996 and have made a major impact on the metal scene from the start. It was Glasgow's turn this time to see how the Chicago metalers bring the sickness.

Supported by Shinedown, they were a fantastic opening band. Getting the crowd jumping up and down (warming them up for the main act.) New track "second chance" was a fantastic rock anthem for any up and coming rock band. Fiting in perfect to the typical image you have of a hard rock band. At points i thought i was watching a live performance of Guitar Hero. As the band where going for it all right! The band have been in the queue to make it big for some time now. I was all head banded up and ready for Disturbed once Shinedown came off stage. Hopefully with much support from the fans i saw tonight - they will get to the place they want to be.

The carling academy was full of a very mixed crowd from young children sporting the long locks and black metal t-shirts to those obviously fans from the beginning. As the lights went down, an almighty cheer came from the crowd, emerging from the mist on stage was front man David Draiman. He was being pushed onto the stage looking like he had came out of a Hannibal Lector film, mask and all.

Bursting straight into song, the band performed from the minute they came on to the minute they left. At points i felt the drummer was too loud and overpowered Draiman. They certainly got the crowd going "let me see those devil hands in the air" shouted Draiman, and that they did every single person shoving their hands in the air. It was like being apart of a cult, every person in their was hypnotised by the band

"Indestructible" being the latest album from the band, the title track from the album along with "Inside the fire" had the crowd jumping up and down and banging their heads. Older tracks such as "10000 fists" and "liberate" where definitely crowd pleasers. I am still humming along to these songs in my head, this is a definite sign. The crowd varied as they were united in their passion for the band, one guy showing more love than others danced like the lead singer of Korn. Hands were moving faster than Michael Flatley's feet during river dance, he was certainly feeling the music

The band obviously think about how their show is going to come across, from the lights being synchronised with the drums to how the band dance as if choreographed. The band pumped energy and it didn't deflate the entire show. A band who have being doing this for so long certainly know what crowds love.

This is a different style of music to what i would normally go along to, but having seen what fantastic musicians and performers Disturbed, my opinion of them changed slightly compared to what i thought before i came in. I didn't put my hands in the air along with the other metal heads, but maybe next time i might be near tempted to chant along with them.
