Cortney Harding of Billboard.com reports that Chicago heavy rockers DISTURBED will be doing a partnership with acclaimed FX TV show "Sons of Anarchy", a "Sopranos"-like drama about a motorcycle club, that includes a chance to win airfare and tickets to the band's Seattle show.

DISTURBED has sold 9 million albums domestically in the last 10 years, and almost half that number can be attributed to its breakthrough record, 2000's "The Sickness", which has sold 4.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But the band has been remarkably consistent, even as sales have trended downward: 2002's "Believe" sold 1.8 million, 2005's "Ten Thousand Fists" sold 1.9 million, and 2008's "Indestructible" sold 1.1 million.

DISTURBED's fifth album, "Asylum", is scheduled for release on August 31 via Reprise.

"There are many ways the new record isn't really different from the previous ones," vocalist David Draiman tells Billboard.com. "It's more complex in terms of composition, and I think the storytelling aspect of the lyrics is better. But while we always want to grow, we never want to deviate from what we fundamentally do. We make rhythmic, aggressive rock. All killer, no filler."

"Gordon says the band is planning on doing more with gaming for 'Asylum.'

'They are the Xbox artist of the month, and we have created a game called 'Escape From the Asylum,' which will launch online in August,' he says. 'They've done tons of synchs in videogames, and we are releasing a three-pack for 'Rock Band' on Aug. 24, and working on something with 'Guitar Hero,' too.' He says Disturbed was often synched in World Wrestling Entertainment events or ultimate fighting shows, but those outlets have recently decided they want music that's 'more PG.'"

"The new tour will also feature some of the most elaborate staging of the band's career, although they're quick to point out that fans expecting a Muse-style laser show will be disappointed. 'They will have big screens and videos,' Gordon says. 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Dave Draiman, the charismatic frontman for platinum selling band Disturbed needs to relax. He would soon be embarking on a yearlong with Disturbed.

As per the news, the last three albums released by the band have all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. The same is expected from their latest offering called ‘Asylum’.

Disturbed has so far sold 9 million albums domestically in the last 10 years of their collective existence. Their album ‘The Sickness’, sold 4.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album ‘Believe’ sold 1.8 million and 2005’s ‘Ten Thousand Fists’ sold 1.9 million. ‘Indestructible’ released in 2008 sold a cool 1.1 million.

The band has built up a very strong reputation and fan base over the years.

Disturbed fans are extremely loyal and they even attend concert with their parents. The fans are also going to appear in the approaching DVD, called ‘Decade of Disturbed’.

Dave Draiman should be relaxed.

After all, he's calling from sunny San Francisco, where he's enjoying a beautiful summer day with his girlfriend before he embarks on a yearlong tour with his band, Disturbed. The group's last three albums have all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and unless Susan Boyle drops a surprise last-minute record Aug. 31, its fifth album, "Asylum" (Reprise), will probably do the same.

Disturbed has sold 9 million albums domestically in the last 10 years, and almost half that number can be attributed to its breakthrough record, 2000's "The Sickness," which has sold 4.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But the band has been remarkably consistent, even as sales have trended downward: 2002's "Believe" sold 1.8 million, 2005's "Ten Thousand Fists" sold 1.9 million, and 2008's "Indestructible" sold 1.1 million.

The act has built a solid tour following during its long career, and has a fan base renowned for its loyalty and longevity. Disturbed fans are known for not only sticking with the band, but for passing fan-dom along, as evidenced by the crowd-surfing elementary schoolers who attend shows with their parents and appear in the forthcoming DVD, "Decade of Disturbed."

But despite all of this, Draiman is not mellow. "I'm always worried," he says. "About everything."

Part of this neurosis could just be his natural state. While he's funny and friendly on the phone, a quick read of his lyrics reveals that his band's name is appropriate. Topics tackled on the new record include "being trapped in the prison of your own mind," losing a lover, religion serving as a catalyst for war and the Holocaust. The album's lightest track -- if you can call it that -- "The Animal," is about becoming a werewolf, though don't expect it to show up in any "Twilight" fan videos anytime soon.

Disturbed began rehearsals in Chicago on Wednesday (July 28th) for the upcoming Uproar Tour, which will be the first time the band has played together onstage since the end of the touring cycle for its 2008 record, Indestructible. Singer David Draiman told us that fans can expect a Disturbed show bigger than anything the band has done before: "The production for this touring cycle is turning out to be really, really amazing, really impressive. I can't really give away too much, but I will say that it is a aspect that no one has ever seen from Disturbed live -- very theatrical, very dramatic, very visually stimulating -- so we're very much looking forward to letting people see a Disturbed performance they've never seen before."

Disturbed will hit the road on this summer's Uproar Tour with Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Hellyeah, Halestorm and others beginning August 17th in Minneapolis.

The band's new album, Asylum, will arrive on August 31st and features the single "Another Way To Die."

A limited edition CD/DVD version of the record will come with concert footage, instructional videos and the hour-long "Decade of Disturbed" documentary.

David Draiman of Disturbed stopped by yesterday. I am so jealous he's settled down in Austin, TX. It's a city I would like to retire to. Great weather, great people, great food and great music! And no state income tax! David told me the band will start rehearsals tomorrow in Chicago and their first show is Aug 13th at Sturgis, just prior to heading to Minneapolis to rehearse with their full stage production. The "toys" they are bringing on this tour, he said, are bigger and more outrageous than anything they've ever done (or any other band has done for that matter!!!)

The title track from Disturbed’s upcoming release Asylum clocks in at over seven minutes, and hardly sounds like anything the band might have played in the past. It begins with an orchestral array of acoustic strumming and clean-tone texturing until finally giving way to the psychotic thrash of drop-tuned metal that has become the band’s signature sound over 14 years and five albums. Disturbed’s band members playfully refer to themselves as “The Danny Donegan Orchestra” during these types of forays into unexpected sonic realms, a tribute to guitarist Dan Donegan’s knack for pushing the envelope with his arrangements.

Orchestration aside, Donegan insists that Asylum is still very much a Disturbed record, which means there’s no shortage of furious, odd-time riffing, exotic dropped tunings, and machine gun-style snare unisons. It’s still very dark and still very metal, which makes sense for a guitarist like Donegan, who grew up on the Irish south side of Chicago, listening to classic metal groups like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden before getting into the guitar acrobatics of ’80s glam rock. That’s where he picked up tapping techniques, sweep arpeggios, and whammy bar tricks by studying George Lynch of Dokken and Warren DeMartini of Ratt, teaching himself the instrument.

Being a self-taught player, he says, is what pushes him to break convention in his own compositions. His newest creations were written and tracked exclusively with a modded-out Schecter Ultra Classic, which has replaced his Washburn signature model as his primary axe. In the wake of a new endorsement deal with Schecter, Donegan has opted to put away his Gibson Les Pauls, SGs and PRS Tremonti for a while too. From his home studio in Chicago, Donegan talked to us about his new Schecter, his songwriting philosophy, and his never-ending quest for tone during some much-deserved downtime before embarking on a massive 35-show arena tour around North America.

As the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival nears, co-headliners Disturbed are contemplating their set list. Singer David Draiman says he believes the title cut and lead-off track to the band's upcoming album "Asylum" should go over well live, but it might not be the way to launch their shows. Still, Draiman admits that when fans hear it they might be surprised. Regarding their performances on the Uproar Festival, Draiman explains, quote, "We have a number of different things we're looking at." While the singer notes they might kick shows off with "Asylum," he adds, quote, "We're toying with some production elements in particular where we're trying to take a more bombastic approach potentially." Disturbed's "Asylum" will be in stores August 31st. The Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival will begin in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 17th.

BENEFIT SHOWS, AUCTION FOR MADINA LAKE’S MATTHEW LEONE

Chicago, IL (JULY 19, 2010) – On July 6th, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone came to the aid of a woman being physically assaulted by her husband on the 1300 block of West Ohio Street. After intervening and calling Chicago police, Leone was beaten by the man and left unconscious in the street. Matthew's brain injuries were so severe that multiple surgeries have been required to remove portions of his skull. Matthew does not have medical insurance and is currently recovering at home.

Through the Pain is a non-profit benefit alliance created by Matthew’s friends in support of his yet untold medical, legal and rehabilitation costs. Partnering with Sweet Relief, a non-profit charity that maintains a financial fund from which professional musicians can draw from when in need of medical care or financial assistance, we are holding a series of benefit concerts, auctions and special events.

The first concert features an acoustic set from Nathan and Mateo of Madina Lake and performances by AM Taxi, The Fold, The Lifeline and David Costa takes place at Double Door (21+) on Saturday, August 21st.

The second show will be held at Hard Rock Hotel Chicago (21+) on Sunday, August 22nd. The lineup includes The Lovehammers, Kill Hannah, Scott Lucas of Local H, Makeshift Prodigy and The Frantic. In addition to hosting the concert, Hard Rock Hotel Chicago has created an exclusive room offer whereby the hotel will donate $15 for every room booked during the entire month of August.

We have a really big update for you guys today. We converted our site to wordpress. It will make it easier to manage the pages, and the news section. We also have a new gallery for the members photos set up. So if any one is a member with us they can have a photo posted up. The change over will take place in the next week. I had to import all the post from the old blogger site where our news was hosted to this wordpress. So every thing is going to look weird till i have the chance to fix them all. KORN bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu has joined forces with members of METALLICA, SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, DISTURBED, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and HATEBREED to record an instrumental song to benefit DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng.

As some of you may know, Cheng is currently in a semi-conscious state following an automobile accident in Santa Clara, California on November 4, 2008. Chi is slowly making progress but he needs your help.

Cheng's brother wrote in an online post that Chi's insurance company had stopped paying for his treatment in mid-January. His mother posted that Cheng's house was returned to the bank and his dog was given away.

You can support Chi and his family by heading over to the A Song For Chi site where you can download your free copy of the song, watch the music video and — most importantly — make a donation. 100% of the donations will go to Chi and his family to help cover his ongoing medical expenses.

We now have a new layout up. Decided the site needed a fresh look. I am working on adding new forums and not using the old forums thats hosted on invisionfree. The new forums will give me more options and be so much better then the one we have now. And you may notice that some of the old pages are not up. (IE: About the DZ team, Downloads page) Those will be back up shortly. I am still working on updating the site. It will take me a few weeks longer so bare with me. The meet and greet blog has been moved to the forums. But I wouldn't worry posting till the new forums are up as your going to have to repost them again any ways. More updates to the site will be coming soon such as more videos you can download. More photos to the gallery. And lots and lots of downloads. DISTURBED took out its biggest stage production in years on this spring's Music As A Weapon tour, which made the show ripe for documenting on a DVD. Vocalist David Draiman told The Pulse of Radio that the group plans to do just that and more. "We already have a bunch of footage that's been amassed, and we're trying to do a full-blown production shoot of one or more of these actual live performances," he said. "And there is definitely plans for a DVD in the works. I don't know necessarily that it will be specifically a Music As A Weapon DVD. I think that it's going to be more of a 'Decade of Disturbed', so to speak."

Draiman did not give any indication of when the DVD might be released.

DISTURBED is currently touring Europe as part of the summer festival circuit. That will likely bring the touring cycle behind the band's "Indestructible" album to a close as the band turns its attention later in the year to its fifth studio effort.

The Weapon lineup also featured KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, LACUNA COIL, CHIMAIRA, and others, along with extreme sports demonstrations, tattoo artists, a vendor village and outdoor second stage.

Eric Lewis of Times & Transcript recently conducted an interview with DISTURBED frontman David Draiman. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the seemingly never-ending life on the road:

"It's not easy, my friend, regardless of what people will tell you. I never understood why so many musicians turn to abusive drug use until I had been on the road for five, six years. And then you begin to understand why they get drawn into it, why they need it, why they need something to carry them over during the times of abandonment, or loneliness, of loss of anonymity, of loss of self, of loss of any stability and normalcy of life."

"You have to decide what's important to you. For instance, myself, I mean I lead a very, very straight-edge sort of lifestyle on the road. I'm kind of like in a bubble — can't drink, can't smoke, can't hang out late. None of it. My body is my instrument, and I'm not one of those guys that has an iron constitution and can go ahead and obliterate themselves and be OK the next day. I just can't do it, especially with how physically demanding pulling these songs off vocally is. You really need to respect what it takes to pull this off, and you really need to respect your body."

"I'm not tired of writing music and performing in front of crowds, but the life of touring, I've been tired of it for a long, long, long time.

On DISTURBED's future touring activities:

"I think that we in the future are going to be a little more selective in our touring and not tour as extensively, not cover territories more than once or twice in a cycle, and really kind of make each DISTURBED performance an event. I don't think that at our age and with the level of strenuousness that this life requires that we can continue beating the hell out of ourselves the way that we have."

On recording the last album, "Indestructible", without the help of an outside producer:

"It definitely makes you rely on each other much more heavily. Having that outside voice was sometimes helpful but, truth be told, 95 per cent of what has made every DISTURBED record from an arrangement perspective and from the way that the songs were actually written was completed prior to tracking, prior to entering into the studio."

On being fortunate to remain successful for so many years:

"We've survived extinction. We've been very, very fortunate. I think that we've been consistent. We've put out records that consistently have been what the fans have been looking for from DISTURBED. We've been consistent with our live performances. As long as we continue to maintain that level of trust with our fanbase, I think they'll still be there."

DISTURBED Guitarist: Don't Call Us 'Nu Metal' - June 3, 2009

JB Martell and Heavy Metal Momma of We Love Metal recently conducted an interview with guitarist Dan Donegan of DISTURBED. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

We Love Metal: A lot of people on the Internet call DISTURBED "nu" metal. Do you consider yourself nu metal?

Dan: Well, I think we got lumped in that category because we came out at the same time that category was added and a lot of these bands started to come out in the late '90s is the same time that we got signed. We were fortunate to have outlasted that by riding that wave and showed that we have always been influenced by the classic metal bands, so there was nothing nu metal in our minds about what we were doing. Nu metal, to me, at the time was bands that were incorporating turntables and little bits of hip hop with metal guitars and drumming, and I respect some of those bands that did it… I was fans of some of those bands that did it, but the bands that inspired us to pick up an instrument were the first bands — BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, PANTERA, METALLICA, QUEENSRŸCHE — those were always guitar-based, riff-driven, double-bass, hard, slamming, powerful melodic vocals. Those are the ingredients that we have. I guess we have always just viewed ourselves as a metal band trying to expand and follow in the footsteps of the greats.

We Love Metal: I guess that's why we asked it because a lot of people will group you in with KORN and SLIPKNOT… and respect for those bands but...

Dan: And there is respect. We have toured with those bands and are fans of them. KORN, at the time, was revolutionary in bringing the seven-string detuned guitars in. You know, that's their thing and that was something new that they were bringing to the table and a lot of the newer bands were starting to follow that lead. SLIPKNOT, obviously, with nine members in the band is more of a chaotic show there and percussive. I mean that's their thing, they had their own little niche, their own thing. With us, we were relying basically on what we were brought up on, and the fact that David [Draiman] is one of the only singers in my mind, one of the few singers that is very melodic and rhythmic in his vocal styles as well. I think a lot of nu metal bands didn't offer much melody; there was a lot of monotone vocals and a lot of screamers. Some are very good at it, but our preference was to bring something you're going to be able to hum the melody to when you leave a show or listen to an album.

We Love Metal: Do you think those classifications are hurting metal sales? Like, if you get classed as metal, do you think that is hurting you on a mass scale?

Dan: I really don't put that much thought into it. I don't care. You know, we just write music that is right for us. Whatever category someone feels comfortable putting us in, you know, they can go ahead, but I never really bothered looking at it that way of where do we fit in because people are confused of where does DISTURBED fit. Nowadays heavy metal, it seems the term is changing quite a bit. Like I said, when we were growing up, heavy metal were those classic metal bands. Today's heavy metal, at times, seems to be who can play the fastest or scream the loudest or have the most monotone vocals. That's not what I remember heavy metal being to me. There were always different divisions of heavy metal, be it hardcore or death metal or black metal, so you know I never really worried about what category we fit in or where we fit in. As long as we wrote music that moved the four of us in the room and we got a chill up our spine when we created it, then that's all I was ever concerned about.

We Love Metal: Something that you and Dave are quite vocal about is the record industry's seeming inability to adapt to people. With that being said, DISTURBED is multi-platinum with all albums. Do you think it's your fan base's hardcore loyalty that causes them to continue to buy the material?

Dan: Sure. I mean, definitely the fan base. Definitely. You know, not to pat ourselves on the back too much, but when we create our songs, when we put out an album, we give them nothing but the best we have to offer from start to finish. I think some of the other bands don't put forth that effort. I think there is a lot of filler on other albums and bands that are only concerned about their two or three singles or whatever it might be. You know, I like the whole body of work. I'm an old-school thinker of hoping that fans don't only download a single. I hope they appreciate the first song to the last song and find some sort of connection within there. My biggest flattering thing for me personally is when someone comes up and names a song that is not a single that they connected with that has become a favorite of theirs. I mean, they are all important to us. We work hard and we put just as much attention into the last song of the album or a song that stays off the album that is always a tough decision for us to make, but it gets an equal amount of attention as whatever our first single might be. That's just always been our attitude of trying to create the best stuff at that point in our lives.

We Love Metal: You've been on the road with ALL THAT REMAINS, SKINDRED, and ART OF DYING. You guys are obviously the most commercially successful of them, with no disrespect to the bands. Do you find you are taking on a mentoring role with them?

Dan: I think with every band we're out touring with, when you spend time with a lot of talents and musicians, you learn a lot from each other. You know, it's not that we're just strictly the teacher. Even as the headliners, you pick up little things from other bands. Everyone is talented out here. When we're out on tour and we do these festivals in Europe you're on the same bill as METALLICA or JUDAS PRIEST and then you are sharing the stage with some of those bands, you look at them and ask, "What do we need to do to get to that level, to have that long of a career?" I think we all definitely learn from each other. I mean, I notice other bands might have toured with us and they see us in that headlining spot and we bring a bigger production show, we've become and arena-sized band. They definitely see that and ask themselves the same question: what do we do to get to that level to have that kind of audience? We have the most dedicated hardcore fan base. I'm amazed to see the wide age range of fans that we have brought out to the show. So it's good to know that when we see younger faces we have been at this for a good solid ten years and we're still tapping into a new generation of people.

DISTURBED Frontman: 'Success Does Not Always Equate To The Best Of Luck And Happiness' - May 17, 2009

On the lyrical inspiration for 2008's self-produced "Indestructible" and its projected follow-up effort:

"I wish that my life experiences didn't dictate continuing to delve into such darkness. Success, unfortunately, does not always equate to the best of luck and happiness. I've had a very rocky road prior to writing this record, and I've had a very rocky road this year as well."

List of recent challenges: His relationship with his fiancée, of German and Persian descent, caused a riff with his Jewish Orthodox family, who didn't approve of their impending marriage. She left him late last year; His mother had a minor heart attack last month, and his father is still recovering from major reconstructive back surgery that required a cadaver bone in his spine; At the beginning of the current Music as a Weapon IV tour in March, Draiman lost his dog, an Akita — "my longtime companion and the love of my life" — to an aggressive form of bone cancer.

"There have been friends who have betrayed me, who owe me hundreds of thousands of dollars. There have been business deals that have gone bad. I've taken my hits from this economy as well.

On why so many listeners have connected to DISTURBED's music:

"All of our music, everything that we gear our career and energy toward, is freeing you from your day-to-day burdens in life, casting away your pain, casting away you're your anguish, your agony, using the music as a cathartic element that helps free you of the things in life which weigh you down and makes you feel more powerful."

On the chance to perform for the troops in Camp Buehring in Kuwait early last year for Operation MySpace:

"To go ahead and play to 10,000 fully armed troops with fully automatic weapons in a mosh pit was something very, very unique that I don't think I'll ever get to see again in my lifetime. If I do, I will bless the day that it comes."

It was a warzone.

Shots from the snare rang out in the night as bass and toms pulsed the Izod Center, shaking the ground on which the soldiers stood. Shrill screams of guitar poured from speakers, sending them into a frenzy. The infantrymen dressed in black circled the floor wildly, screaming and flailing in response to their field general's arrival, the man around which all of this chaos revolved.

Disturbed vocalist David Draiman, dressed in gray, descended from the ceiling of the Izod Center on a massive re-creation of Disturbed's metallic emblem, his dual labret piercing shining off the spotlight. After welcoming the crowd, Music as a Weapon IV's headliner opened with an all-too-appropriate piece. "Voices," the first track off of their debut album, 2000's "The Sickness," kicked off last Wednesdays' performance as Draiman's finely tuned vocal chords blasted fans with the power they paid to hear.

Draiman recently told the Green Bay Press Gazette that the band is "offended" that local veterans are opposed to DISTURBED's Music As A Weapon tour playing on May 17 at Green Bay, Wisconsin's Resch Center, which is near the Brown County Veterans Memorial. Draiman told the paper, "There is no band on the face of this planet that has been more supportive of our troops than DISTURBED — period. For this level of ignorance -- and I don't even know what else to call it but ignorance — to be exhibited by the veterans, it's almost like a direct slap in the face to us.

"Draiman has told The Pulse of Radio numerous times in the past that even though he was personally against the invasion and occupation of Iraq, DISTURBED is 100 percent behind America's armed forces: "We need to support our troops and love our troops and do everything we can. In fact, any chance that we as DISTURBED have to perform for the troops, give them a little bit of encouragement, strength, build their hope, I would do in a heartbeat."

Veterans were concerned that the tour, which also includes tattooing and extreme sports demonstrations, would mock the memorial, with one local vet calling the area "sacred land."

Draiman said the idea that the tour would mock the memorial was "completely preposterous." DISTURBED staged a meet-and-greet for military personnel during a tour stop in Fayetteville, North Carolina last week, as journeyed to Kuwait to play for U.S. troops in March 2008. The group often lets members of the military into its shows for free and even dedicated the title track of its latest album, Indestructible, to American soldiers.

Draiman added that he thinks the veterans are opposed to the show because his band plays heavy metal, saying, "I guarantee you that if it were Travis Tritt or somebody like that playing next door to the memorial, they'd have no issue with it. But because of the connotations that are given to this genre ... and perhaps there's a generational gap, they don't understand what this music means to so many of the current serving officers in the military."The local veterans were apparently already disgruntled over construction last summer of a miniature golf course very close to the memorial. The golf course was eventually shut down.

The lead singer of Disturbed was strapped to a giant medallion that lowered him to the Crown Coliseum stage just after 9:30 last night.

It was that kind of night. That kind of concert. Exactly what one would expect as Disturbed headlined an all-star lineup of heavy metal and hard rock bands as part of the Music as a Weapon IV Tour.

About 5,000 screaming fans didn’t seem to care how Draiman got to the stage, just as long as he rocked it.

The sound of air raid sirens blare at the beginning of Disturbed's latest album, last year's Indestructible, warning of the aggressive metal music to come. Just days after kicking off their own Music as a Weapon IV Tour late last month, similar sirens likely rang out in Oklahoma City, not because of the band's arrival there, but because of a tornado warning also in effect the night of their show. A little more destructive than even Disturbed likes to get on the road, the swirling Midwest winds passed and left things unscathed. On previous Music as a Weapon Tours – all three of which have followed Disturbed's three other albums (2000's The Sickness, 2002's Believe, and 2005's Ten Thousand Fists) – such outdoor threats didn't present such problems for the band as their legions of loyal fans locked themselves indoors with the band for a night of metal's biggest hits this millennium. This year's tour has expanded outdoors, including a second stage for the first time, featuring additional acts alongside Disturbed and other main-stage performers Killswitch Engage, Lacuna Coil, and Chimaira, as well as outdoor locations for tattoo artists and stunt motorcyclists, also out with the tour. The whole thing should feel like something of a celebration, and it should, because while Indestructible might have the darkest sound of any of the Chicago metal band's albums, it's also their third consecutive chart-topper, making them one of only six rock bands to have achieved such a sales streak, and also their first to receive a Grammy nomination (for the equally chart-topping single "Inside The Fire"). A good cardio workout at least five days a week. Between 12 and 16 bottles of water daily. A healthy diet.

Sleep? He falls behind there, getting between two and five hours per night.

Everything else in Draiman's routine is necessary, given the band's brutal road schedule.

"It requires you to live life in a bubble," Draiman says in advance of the band's appearance Tuesday at the Petersen Events Center as headliners on the "Music as a Weapon Tour." "When the material and the style of vocalizing is as challenging as our style has become, and as unorthodox as it is, no matter what level of technique you master or use, it's still going to take its wear and tear on your voice. The Chicago metal band whose current tour includes a music and tattoo festival to be held May 17 in the plaza directly outside the Resch Center says it is offended that some local veterans don’t think the event belongs near the Brown County Veterans Memorial on Armed Forces Drive.

“There is no band on the face of this planet that has been more supportive of our troops than Disturbed -- period,’’ frontman David Draiman said in a phone interview from the road. “For this level of ignorance -- and I don’t even know what else to call it but ignorance -- to be exhibited by the veterans, it’s almost like a direct slap in the face to us.’’

Some veterans have expressed concern that the Music as a Weapon Tour IV, which includes an afternoon festival with extreme sports, tattooing and a secondary stage before the main concert in the arena that night, will mock the memorial, which is further west on Armed Forces Drive at the corner of South Oneida Street.

Draiman called that notion “very, very offensive and completely preposterous.’’ Disturbed has a long history of connecting with the troops through its music and outreach, he said, citing a meet-and-greet specifically for military personnel during a tour stop Friday in Fayetteville, N.C., and an interview with The Pentagon Channel earlier this month. BATTLE CREEK -- As the frontman for a hard-rock band that's sold more than 10 million albums worldwide in the last decade, it may seem like Disturbed vocalist David Draiman would have little to complain about.

But Draiman -- who along with guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren and bassist John Moyer is headlining the Music as a Weapon IV tour, coming to Battle Creek's Kellogg Arena April 30 -- is still a human being, and with that mortality comes the struggles that all mortals face, rock star or no rock star.

``It's been a little bit of a rough going for me, these past few months,'' Draiman said by phone recently from a tour stop in Atlanta. ``I had my fiancee leave me; I had to put my dog to sleep on a day off in Denver on this run, who's been with me on many, many tours. ... Just all kinds of heartache.''

In addition to losing his fiancee and his dog, Draiman's mother recently had a ``small heart attack,'' and he himself is just getting over being sick.

``Try singing with strep throat, my friend, not an easy thing,'' Draiman said.

Draiman and his bandmates conceived the Music as a Weapon Tour in 2001 as a way to, as Draiman said, ``try and unite the collective powers of some of the best bands within the genre of hard rock and heavy metal, to try and even the playing field a little bit between our genre and the rest of the genres that seem to dominate the scene.''

Their band has headlined the tour in each of its three previous incarnations, and this year, for the first time, the tour has expanded to include a lifestyle festival, with tattoo artists, an extreme sports complex, a technology and gaming zone and a vendor village. The festival will open at 2 p.m. and the concert -- with Disturbed and Killswitch Engage performing on the main stage and Lacuna Coil, Chimaira and other acts to be announced performing on a second stage -- will begin at 7 p.m.

Draiman said the band had no idea in the beginning that the event would get so big.

Also new to this year's tour -- and also complicated by Draiman's recent illness -- is Disturbed's Music as a Weapon IV Bootleg Series, in which each show on the band's 38-city trek will be recorded and available for download on the band's Web site.

After a five-day hiatus when the Weapon tour wraps up in May, Disturbed will set off for a two-week stint playing shows in Canada, and after another five-day break they'll tour for three more weeks in Europe. Then, Draiman said, the band will begin writing songs for a new record.

Hey there, this is Erin, the DiNG! girl out here on the Music As A Weapon tour. You can generally find me in my booth right next to the stage during the festival part of the show. I’m the one with the new Xbox Ninja Blade game for you to try out, and all of the cell phones and Xboxes with the lovely DiNGs on display. (Check out www.dinglife.com to see what I mean by DiNG!)

Yesterday we were in Erie, PA, where we unfortunately were forced to cancel the outdoor festival. The winds were somewhere around 40 or 50 mph! The tourbus was literally shaking when I woke up that morning. So rather than risking the destruction of the stage and tents and the well-being of the bands and crew, they called off the festival and moved most of the sponsors inside, like Samsung and Affliction, Skull Candy and Hart & Huntington. As for me and DiNG!... Well, there just wasn’t enough space.

After spending way too much time bored on the bus and eating an undisclosed number of snacks, I decided to crash the FYE artist signings – woo! And lucky for you, I brought my camera along with me. Check out a few happy snaps of the guys in Suicide Silence, Bury Your Dead and Chimaira. Yesss! (Perhaps you will recognize a couple of superfans at Chimaira’s signing.)

Though an air of heavy metal filled the concourse of the Bryce Jordan Center, a different scene hid below in the mezzanine: tattoo artists from all over the country working on tattoos for concertgoers.

On Friday, metal band Disturbed played at the BJC to headline the Music as a Weapon IV tour with Killswitch Engage, Lacuna Coil and Chimaira.

This is the first time the Music as a Weapon tour has prominently featured tattoo artists made available to the public. An outdoor side stage was also added, featuring performances of other bands throughout the afternoon.

Heather Vantress, operating manager for the festival part of the tour, said the inclusion of tattoo artists is a natural addition to the show.

"They have tattooers backstage at tons of shows, but now it's available to the public," Vantress said. "We're not reinventing anything."

She said the tattoo artists may have attracted more people to the show because the artists are "world class tattooers."

Vic Back, a tattoo artist, used to tour with The Used, an alternative rock band. Back said he was excited tattooing has been made available to the public at a concert.

"It's the first time this kind of thing has been available to the public in a conventional sense," Back said. "It's been a busier day, but it's definitely a lot of fun."

Tattoo artist Oliver Peck, who operated a booth at the BJC event, currently holds the world record for most tattoos in 24 hours.

"I did 415, but there's some discrepancy on that," Peck said.

Everything worked out pretty well with the addition of artists, which was put together pretty fast, he added. Still, plenty of people wanted nothing to do with the tattoo scene and came purely for the music.

"I'm not troubled enough to get tattooed," Paul Cerula (senior-security and risk analysis) said.
Cerula found Lacuna Coil to be the highlight of the show and said it had "a good balance of female vocals and good rock."

Cerula said he didn't enjoy the other acts.

"A little less self-loathing and anger for the sake of anger would be nice," he said.
Clearfield resident Travis Herman had a different perspective on the concert.

"I came to see the baddest thing on the planet," he said.

Veterans don't want heavy metal music event near Ashwaubenon memorial

ASHWAUBENON — Veterans say a festival that could include tobacco sampling, a tattoo parlor and heavy metal music doesn't belong near the Brown County Veterans Memorial on Armed Forces Drive.

The village recently approved a permit for the Music as a Weapon event, set to take place 2-6 p.m. May 17 at the Resch Center before a Disturbed concert later that night. Organizers say the event won't happen near the memorial, which sits on the corner of South Oneida Street and Armed Forces Drive, but some vets are wary the scene will mock the memorial.

"That is sacred land to the veterans," World War II veteran Bob Young told the Village Board. "They don't like to see it abused.

"The veterans' concern comes on the heels of their displeasure last summer with a miniature golf course constructed almost immediately under the memorial. At that time, PMI Entertainment Group, which manages the Resch Center, shut down the mini-golf and promised not to crowd the memorial.

"There was (a) circus in front of it last year, and veterans were upset," Young said. "We don't want to see another example of that.

"The event's sponsor, Tats and Tunes Inc., out of California, estimates 150 people will attend, though some veterans suspect the number will be higher. The event would include motorcycle jumping, skateboard half-pipe demonstrations, and alcohol sales.

PMI President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Wachter said the event will take place in the brick plaza directly in front of the Resch and possibly in a parking lot across the street, both of which are east of the memorial.

"We told the vets last year we weren't going to do anything near the memorial, and we're still very cognizant of what we told them," he said. "It is something that's important to us.

"He said Chief Operating Officer Cora Haltaufderheid has been meeting with a group of veterans to create a list of "dos and don'ts" about activities near the memorial.

"And not all vets feel that way," Wachter said. "Some of them like that it's in a busy place where lots of people will see it."

It was a bright day for dark music. As the sun was falling behind the mountains and a peaceful, warm spring day in State College was heading toward night, the walls of the Bryce Jordan Center shook. The water in the restroom toilets rippled. And inside the arena, dark purple lights lit up tufts of smoke as the sounds of metal band Chimaira began the culminating event of a day chock full of heavy metal music.

Disturbed, Killswitch Engage, Lacuna Coil and Chimaira headlined the "Music as a Weapon Tour" as it made its stop in Orlando last weekend. They joined forces with Suicide Silence, Spineshank, Bury Your Dead, Crooked X, as well as a couple local bands to create the concert of a lifetime.

The tour is, as David Draiman, lead singer of Disturbed, described, a response to the popularity of other forms of music and an attempt to bring metal and hard rock back to the forefront of the music world. When Dan Donegan (guitarist), Mike Wengren (drummer), and Fuzz (bassist) were sick and tired of auditions with people who just didn't have the vibe that they were looking for, they finally discovered David Draiman (vocalist). He also brought along a name for their band. And that name was Disturbed... We first met them in a small Chicago club called Delilah's and drank with them at Liars Club, Shortly after opening for MINISTRY they became one of the biggest bands on the circuit. It took us two years to get this interview. After they entered number 1 on the Billboard charts with their latest album, "Believe" an interview reality was becoming un-believable. So "down" and out, we "sicked" Nikki Neil from LA to track down the current taste of the metal world, and it was nearly, I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E. Finally after putting off the deadline and not getting Dave, she got a founder of the band. It too was bumped. But two months was shorter than two years. So now, finally, we give to you, their fan, our interview with Disturbed.

Nikki Neil: How have the fans reacted to the new material?

Dan Donegan: Great. As each week goes by they get more and more familiar with the new songs. We have noticed a big difference from when we first started touring for this new album.

NN: Where were you when you got the news that Believe debut at #1 on the Billboard chart?

D: We actually flew back home for a day. We were getting together with our management and with our families and friends. We kind of had a heads up that there was a pretty good shot of debuting at #1.

NN: Did you worry about how fans might react to Believe being that the songs are more melodic than those off the last album?

D: Musically there is still a lot of aggression and syncopation with the double bass drumming and the guitar riffs. David’s vocals have continued to improve, as has the whole band. We wanted this album to show an evolution of the band. I don’t really worry about what other people’s expectations are. We have to do what comes naturally to us and hopefully enough people will connect with it and will be more interested in the message of the songs.

NN: What was going on within the band when you guys started to write the material for Believe?

D: We had just finished twenty-two months of touring in support of The Sickness and I had a bunch of riffs that I had recorded and saved. We didn’t really write a whole lot on the road because it was just too difficult. I needed to come home and be back in the environment that I was comfortable with and doing it the way it’s always been done, which is just sitting in my bedroom with my guitar and just working out ideas. So we came home last December and I sat home for a month. I worked on some ideas, and we got together right after January 1st. Mike and Fuzz came to my house and I showed them the ideas that I had. As we recorded the music I burned a copy to a CD for David and he worked on some melodies and then I collaborated with him to finalize the structure. The album just came together quickly. The writing process went a lot quicker than it had before.

NN: Did the band expect to spend that much time on the road in support of The Sickness?

D: We had no idea what to expect. We didn’t see any reason to stop touring because of the success of [The Sickness] and because things were continuing to heat up for us. We had a lot of great opportunities. We played Ozzfest 2000 and then came back for 2001. Then we went on a lot of great tours with bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Godsmack and we were able to have two successful headlining tours. Things were still going well. The singles were going strong, and the album sales were going strong. But, it finally came to the point to where even though it wasn’t dying down for us it was time for new material. We’d go to a city and someone would say, “Hey this is my sixth or seventh time seeing you guys,” and we we’re like “Okay, well….” Not that they were complaining about it, but we don’t want to bore them either. We figured it was time for something new.

NN: We’re you surprised to find that as you continued to tour the band’s popularity kept increasing?

D: Yeah. This whole thing is just overwhelming to us. What I like the most and I appreciate the most is the fact that it wasn’t an overnight thing for us. It was a steady growth. We had not played any shows outside of Chicago until after The Sickness was released. We had so many good touring opportunities. We were playing in front of thousands of people thanks to Ozzfest and the other tours that we had done. So we saw it grow. Each time we came back to a city we would see a bigger turn. I just think that by knowing we had that connection live we realized that we have a pretty solid fanbase. I much rather obtain a fanbase through hard work and being on the road touring. Because of that a majority of these people are fans for hopefully the length of the band’s career. I’ve seen it happen where a band may have one big radio hit and some of their fans are only fans of that one song and not so much of the band. So knowing that we had to really work to get our fans and to get to the point where radio has embraced us is something that we really appreciate because we know we had to work for it.

NN: I noticed that a number of different religions are represented in the symbol that is one the cover of Believe. What is the significance of the symbol?

D: We’re not a religious band. It is more of a spiritual symbol. We wanted to take the four religious symbols and intertwine them and mesh them together to symbolize unity. It’s more about a belief in one. This album is very positive and that is the message that we were trying to send this time.

NN: Obviously the symbol on the cover correlates with the album’s title.

D: Yeah. It’s about a belief in yourself – a belief in humanity. We wanted something that would shed a little bit of light into such a dark world. A lot of the messages on this album are done in a positive way to try to instill a little bit of hope. I believe that there is a God. I don’t practice a specific religion. I was born and raised Catholic, but I don’t really follow it or go to church. I don’t believe in organized religion. It’s more of a business than a religion.

NN: At what point in your life did you start playing guitar?

D: I probably got my first guitar when I was about ten. I didn’t actually take it seriously until I met a few friends in high school who were getting serious about music. And, then I started playing with other guys and we kind of learned from each other. When we finally played our first show, I remember being scared to death and nervous and when the show was over I remember just wanting more. It just became an addiction at that point. I couldn’t imagine not doing it anymore.

NN: Do you ever get stage fright?

D: Not ever since that first show. During that first show I probably didn’t even move two feet. But, as the show went on I got caught up in the excitement and the adrenaline and the crowd’s response when it was over. It was just a rush. The last time I had any kind of…I wouldn’t say stage fright but I was just really star struck when Ozzy Osbourne came out to watch our set. That is probably the last time I felt a little bit of nervousness because to us he is the godfather of heavy metal and in the two years that we played Ozzfest I’ve never seen him come out and watch any band. After the first show we were moved from headlining the second stage over to the main stage because of the chaos and the turn out that came to the second stage. Sharon Osbourne and the rest of the Ozzfest camp had asked us, mainly for safety reasons, to move to the main stage. So that very next show, which was in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin, Ozzy and a few other bands came out to watch the set because everybody was curious as to why we got moved to the main stage after one show.

NN: Are there any guitar players out there right now that have impressed you with their style?

D: Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine, actually Audioslave now. I ran into him the other day in Los Angeles. I think he is an amazing guitar player. I also think that Adam Jones from Tool is incredible. He’s probably one of my favorite guitar players out there today.
NN: Does it give you a rush when you have the opportunity to play with the musicians that you grew up listening to?

D: Definitely. It’s still hard to swallow it all knowing that these bands have become friends of ours. Like the guys from Pantera. We just played a show on Halloween night in Dallas, their hometown, and Vinnie Paul and Dimebag [Darrell] came onstage and played with us. We played one of their songs as a tribute to them because we’ve always been big Pantera fans. I don’t get stage fright from walking out on stage in front of 25,000 – 50,000 people, but when we share the stage with some of the musicians that we respect and who have respect for us it is pretty overwhelming.

NN: What was MTV’s reason for banning the video for “Prayer”?

D: They weren’t too specific about exactly what it was that they were offended by because if we decided to go back and change those things and then they still probably wouldn’t have played. It would be like, “Well, you said this was the problem.” We can only assume that they were sensitive to the earthquake scene with the building crumbling, and when it came down to it we chose not to re-edit it. We felt that there was a very positive message in the lyrics and in the visual aspects and if we were to change it then we would be admitting that we felt the message was wrong. I think it is kind of hypocritical that they had a problem with the message that we were sending, but whenever you turn on the television, every day, some channel is showing scenes from 9/11 including MTV. When we submitted the video to MTV it was near the one-year anniversary and, at the time, MTV and pretty much every channel was showing those exact images. They are the ones putting those images in people’s heads. The message that we had was about going through life with its trials and tribulations and struggles and trying to give people hope by showing that you can find the strength within yourself to make it through the difficult times. We wanted something big and we chose to go with an earthquake scene. And, after the building crumbles we come out on top of the ruble and finish the song as a band coming together as one and showing that we made it though a difficult time and by doing so we were trying to give people a little more hope.

NN: Obviously you all had to make a lot of sacrifices in order to get to the point where the band is today. Would you say that those sacrifices paid off in the end?

D: Definitely. We still continue to make sacrifices. It is difficult to have a normal life when we are on the road. It’s hard to have relationships. We’ve all been through that. We’ve all been through pretty big break-ups and it is something that we all continue to struggle with at times. It’s not easy to have a girlfriend when you’re 1,000/2,000 miles away from home all the time. It is difficult to do. Some people can do it. We’re very involved in the business of this band, and we have a hard time trusting other people or giving them the ball to run with.

NN: What is your biggest non-musical influence?

D: Probably my family. My brother and everybody that has believed in me and pushed me to prove that I can do this. There were struggles early on because there was a time when my parents said, “Okay Dan you’re going to have to grow up and get a real job. This is a nice hobby you have.” In a way that was an inspiration to me to have to prove my father wrong and show him that I can do this. Every time I was told that I needed a plan B and something to fall back on that inspired me to work harder at this to prove that I never even thought of a plan B.

NN: Being that Disturbed is part of the Ozzfest family, how did Dave Williams’ (Drowning Pool) death affect you?

D: I was very shocked. We were very close to him and all the guys from Drowning Pool. We spent most of 2001 with those guys because we were both on Ozzfest that year. We immediately became really good friends with them at the start of Ozzfest. A few days before Dave’s death the band was in Chicago for Ozzfest and we were at home working on our set and rehearsing for the tour. We had gone out to see the show and right before I left that night I hugged him and said, “I’ll see you soon.” If anything, I’m glad that my last memory of him was leaving like that.

NN: If something happened to David, aside from him leaving the band on his own accord, do you think Disturbed would continue?

D: I really don’t know if that is possible. I couldn’t even imagine that happening. There is certain chemistry within this band that works. Each guy brings something to the table here. If something happened to any one of us I don’t know if it could continue as Disturbed. I couldn’t even imagine that happening.

NN: If you had to describe various aspects of who you are what would they be?

D: I’m very down-to-earth. I’m the same guy. I have to be that way. I was raised that way. My mother has a very good heart, and I couldn’t let her down if any of this ever changed me. I think she is more excited about the fact that somebody comes up to her at one of our shows and tells her how down-to-earth her son is. That makes her more proud than just being a fan of the music. I’m just a normal guy. I love music. I love to hang out and be on the road with my best friends and perform. I’m very confident in what I do without being arrogant in any way. I just believe that anything I want to accomplish happens from hard work and dedication. I don’t know if I’m giving you exactly five words, but I’d say, dedication, motivation, confidence, and down-to-earth. Those words pretty much sum up who I feel I am.

NN: A major music magazine recently did a poll where they asked their readers if they thought musicians should have an expiration date. What do you think?

D: No. I think music is a way to express oneself. There is no better way to express your feelings and your emotions than through music and lyrics. I think that it is a good way to vent and release.

NN: I hear ya. If you had the opportunity to do this all over again what would you do differently, if anything?

D: Nothing. I think it is all a learning process. I think that we’ve all paid our dues and we’ve done it in other local bands and there is a reason why we all came together. It was all part of the game plan. I’ve known Mike and Fuzz for many years and we’ve played in different local bands on the South side of Chicago. And through those times I’ve seen them shine in their bands knowing that they shared the same hunger that I did and they had the same drive and the same motivation that I had and that is what brought us together. We quit our projects in order to start a band together, and we searched for that final piece of the puzzle, which we got immediately when we found David. This will probably be another long run for us. As long as people want it and if things continue to succeed for us we’ll probably spend another 22 months on the road. Whatever it takes. If things are going good we will stay on the road. We want to continue to make music and put it out there. Our passion is the stage and in order to do that we’ll just keep on putting out music so we can keep on performing.

The Gauntlet recently caught up with Disturbed frontman David Draiman who is currently headlining the Music as a Weapon IV tour with Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage, and Chimaira. When we asked David Draiman about the possibility of him finally getting a tattoo, he responded "There is a very high chance that I might. I am thinking of getting one to be honest. I am the only guy in the band and quite possibly metal without one, and that is what kind of makes me wonder if I should cross that line. I have that whole Jewish heritage thing and ink on the skin. There have been several things recently in my life that have compelled me to cross that threshold. I haven't been a practicing Jew for quite some time. It is the last thing I still haven't done. I am not going to be buried in a Jewish cemetery anyway so why do I continue to not do something I have wanted to do for many years."

Disturbed Stages All-Day Fest for Fans at Arena

Disturbed likes giving back to its fans.

And justifiably so.

When Disturbed's latest record, Indestructible, was released last June, it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Top 200 albums chart, just like the metal group's two previous offerings, 2005's Ten Thousand Fists and 2002's Believe.

That feat puts Disturbed as one of just seven rock acts to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1, joining Van Halen, U2, Metallica, The Dave Matthews Band, Staind and System of a Down.

Bassist John Moyer credits the loyalty of Disturbed fans in particular and metal fans in general for the accomplishment.

Nu-metal isn’t as new as it once was, but Disturbed isn’t, uh, disturbed by such labels.

On Saturday at Amway Arena, lead singer David Draiman and the band headlined the marathon Music as a Weapon Tour, capping about 8 hours of sweaty, bone-rattling metal with a lean and loud 90-minute set.

It’s the fourth edition of the trek Draiman concocted because "we were sick and tired of the dominance of the other genres of music in this world," he told the crowd.

If the audience inside the arena had necessitated the opening of the upper bowl, that message would have been more powerful. Still, the fans that did come out were passionate, an emotion absolutely repaid by the band.

Draiman descended to the stage strapped to a giant silver medallion adorned with pentagrams for the opening "Voices." It set the pace for a set that rarely stopped to take a breath, as the band sparked massive sing-alongs on anthems such as "Just Stop," "Prayer" and "Get Psycho."

Draiman, a muscular, though surprisingly diminutive physical presence on stage, carries off the "psycho" notion with ease. His voice, whether speaking or singing, is a menacing force: "Brothers and sisters, my blood!" he exclaimed in the early going. "Speak to me!"

His snippet of "It’s a Small World" was short, but spooky.

Speaking of covers, the band offered its take on Genesis’ "Land of Confusion," adding a corrosive edge that improved on the original.

The crowd embraced the new Indestructible, represented by the Grammy nominated "Inside the Fire" and the title track. Still, it was older songs such as "Stupify" and the closing "Down With the Sickness" that generated the most electricity.

"In troubled times, I still see plenty of faces in this audience," Draiman said. "I still say that no other genre helps you through hard times in life like hard rock and heavy metal."

Confronted by the aggressive intensity of Disturbed, it’s hard to argue.

Disturbed singer David Draiman realizes his band is going against business logic in launching the fourth edition of its Music As A Weapon festival tour this spring.

Although the economy is at its worst point in nearly 30 years, the group is not only doing the festival, it has expanded the production to include a second stage of musical acts and added an entire lifestyle component to the event.

The lifestyle event includes BMX, skate and motocross demonstrations, a group of 20 of the nation's top tattoo artists on-site and ready to offer their talents to patrons, and a multi-media area and vendor village, with products from retailers such as Xbox and Affliction.

"It's turned into something really larger than it's ever been," Draiman said. "What we're trying to do is give it back to people at a time when the economy is tough and people really need this type of music to kind of get them through. Come on out, here you go, for under 40 bucks, this is what you get — an entire day's worth of entertainment from all aspects of the genre that exist today, and the biggest rock show that we've ever had the opportunity to put on."

Aud on winning streak. Promoters, staff not surprised by recent sellouts

UTICA — The Utica Memorial Auditorium may be on a winning streak — not unlike the last sports team to play there.

The New Hartford Spartans ice hockey team won the Division II State Championship, and the Aud sold out the last three major events booked there in the past month or so — the Feb. 27 Disturbed and Sevendust show; the March 20 Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold and Papa Roach performance and the Monster Truck ThunderSlam on March 27 and 28.

The two hard rock shows alone brought in about 11,000 fans total, said general manager Will Berkheiser. And that’s despite Utica’s distance from New York City or other urban population centers.

But promoters, fans and Aud staff aren’t surprised, and say the trend is likely to continue.“A lot of times, we have promoters fighting for days and dates” for their bands, Berkheiser said.That’s as much due to band scheduling as it is to the venue’s popularity.
